It is manifested in the child’s campaign (that has no justification) of denigration against a parent. This topic is not without controversies both in the legal and mental health professions. Learn both sides of the issues and be prepared!

Continuing Legal Education Course Description

Session #1: Introduction to Parental Alienation Syndrome (PAS)

Segment 1: Introduction to PAS

Parental Alienation Syndrome is described and defined, as is its origins and context. Its incidence and causes are described as are the basic symptoms of PAS. This segment serves as an overture for the course. (15 minutes)

Segment 2: The Symptoms of PAS

The eight specific symptoms or manifestations of PAS are discussed in detail with examples and discussion. The symptom pattern of PAS is explained in terms of diagnosing level of severity. (15 minutes)

Segment 3: Children’s Underlying Psychodynamics

The basics of underlying childhood psychodynamics that allow PAS to develop are discussed and explored. The development of PAS becomes more understandable and explainable when one considers the normal dynamics, defenses and developmental limitations inherent in the child. (15 minutes)

Segment 4: Questions and Answers (15 minutes)

Session #2: Levels of Severity of PAS

Segment 1: Mild and Moderate PAS

An overview of the differential diagnosis of determining levels of severity of PAS is explained. Mild and Moderate PAS are discussed with clinical examples. Appropriate treatment recommendations for the court are discussed. (15 minutes).

Segment 2: Severe PAS

Severe PAS, the form most dramatic and most difficult to treat, is defined and discussed. Appropriate treatment alternatives are discussed as are the issues of transition sites, and custody changes. (15 minutes)

Segment 3: Examining and Cross Examining an Expert or Custody Evaluator re: PAS

Various litigation strategies involving PAS in the courtroom are discussed. . Testifying in the hypothetical form is described and discussed Multiple examples with role playing are provided as illustrative strategies. (15 minutes)

Segment 4: Questions and Answers (15 minutes).

Session #3: Understanding the Alienating Parent

Segment 1: Manifestations of PAS in the Alienating Parent

The psychodynamics and demographic predictors of identifying PAS alienating parents is described and discussed. Some of the controversy of PAS is addressed and placed in context. (15 minutes)

Segment 2: Specific PAS behaviors

Specific or classic PAS behaviors that can be used to help identify a PAS parent are explained and discussed. This segment especially valuable in helping the attorney to clearly identify the presence of PAS in a case from either side. (30 minutes)

Segment 3: Questions and Answers (15 minutes)

Session #4: Understanding the Targeted Parent

Segment 1: Manifestations of PAS in the Targeted Parent

The typical presentation of the PAS Targeted Parent is described with specific examples. Errors most often made by these parents are also described as are suggestions for their correction. The marginalization of this parent is explored in its various expressions. (15 minutes)

Segment 2: Gathering Evidence

The critical role of evidence gathering is discussed with specific recommendations. Understanding the relationship of the adversarial process and PAS is discussed with specific recommendations. Legal representation for both the Targeted Parent as well as for the Alienating Parent discussed, and specific recommendations are made for both cases. (30 minutes)

Session 5: Controversies Surrounding PAS

Segment 1: The Specific Controversies

Since PAS was discovered and described within the context of litigation, it has created many controversies. This segment is devoted to a systematic elaboration of the common issues that are raised regarding PAS. These issues are put in their proper context and explained impartially, allowing the participant to form their own conclusions. (45 minutes)
